Tooth Extractions

Losing a tooth doesn’t sound very appealing—but sometimes, an extraction is the healthiest choice you can make. When a tooth is damaged beyond repair or is causing pain, removing it can be the first step toward feeling better and protecting the rest of your smile.

At Advanced Oral Surgery & Periodontics, we understand that extractions can feel overwhelming. That’s why we take the time to explain every step, answer your questions, and help you feel as relaxed as possible. Whether your tooth is coming out due to damage, crowding, or infection—we’ll guide you through it to improve the health of your smile.

Understanding Tooth Extractions

A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the bone. Your dentist or oral surgeon may recommend an extraction when a tooth cannot be saved or is causing other problems.

The most common reasons include severe decay, gum disease, damage from trauma, or overcrowding. Sometimes a tooth needs to come out before orthodontic treatment, or because it’s impacted and hasn’t come in properly.

There are two main types of extractions. A simple extraction is used when the tooth is visible and easy to remove. A surgical extraction is needed when the tooth is broken, impacted, or difficult to reach. In both cases, we make sure you’re comfortable and safe from start to finish.

The Tooth Extraction Process

Your first visit starts with a consultation. We’ll take X-rays, review your health history, and talk through your symptoms. We’ll also answer any questions and make sure you understand your treatment options.

Before your extraction, we’ll review what to expect and provide detailed instructions to prepare for your appointment. Depending on your needs, we may use local anesthesia to numb the area or offer sedation to help you relax.

During the procedure, we gently remove the tooth and make sure the site is clean. In a simple extraction, the tooth is loosened and removed with special tools. In a surgical extraction, we may make a small incision in the gum to access the tooth more easily. In both cases, we work carefully to reduce trauma and help the area heal well.

Post-Extraction Care

After your extraction, you’ll be sent home with easy-to-follow care instructions. It’s normal to have a little bleeding or swelling in the first 24 hours. We’ll give you gauze to help control bleeding and guide you on how to manage discomfort with ice and medication.

To support healing and reduce the risk of dry socket, it’s important to follow a few simple steps:

  • Avoid using a straw or smoking for at least 24 hours
  • Stick to soft foods like applesauce, yogurt, or mashed potatoes
  • Keep your head elevated and get plenty of rest

As your mouth heals, keep the area clean by brushing gently and following any rinsing instructions we provide. We’ll schedule a follow-up if needed to check your progress and make sure everything is healing as expected.
