Pre-Operation Instructions

After working with hundreds of patients over the years, we know that having surgery can raise a lot of questions. As a patient, it’s important that you feel ready and confident in knowing what to expect. That’s why we’ve put together this guide. We’re here to help you feel calm, confident, and prepared for your upcoming procedure.

Following these instructions will not only help your surgery go smoothly but will also support a smooth recovery. And if you’re ever feeling unsure about anything, just give us a call.

Scheduling and Appointments

Once your surgery is scheduled, we’ll confirm the date and time with you. Please arrive 15 to 30 minutes early to check in and complete any final paperwork. If anything changes or if you’re feeling sick before your appointment, call us right away so we can help you plan accordingly.

Health and Medication

Before your surgery, make sure we have your most up-to-date medical history. Let us know if you’ve had any recent changes in your health, new medications, or allergies.

Some medications—like aspirin or blood thinners—may need to be paused before surgery. Others, like blood pressure medicine, should still be taken with just a small sip of water. We’ll give you specific directions for your unique health situation.

Fasting Requirements

To keep your body safe during anesthesia or sedation, it’s important to follow these fasting guidelines:

  • No food or drink for at least 6 to 8 hours before surgery
  • You may be allowed to drink clear liquids up to 2 hours before (we’ll tell you if this applies)

If you have diabetes, we’ll give you special instructions based on your needs. Please also avoid smoking and alcohol for at least 24 hours before surgery.

Pre-Operative Hygiene

Good oral hygiene helps reduce the risk of infection. On the day of surgery, you can brush and floss gently—just don’t swallow any water.

It’s also advised to skip makeup, nail polish, or jewelry. Wear loose, comfortable clothes and leave contact lenses at home if possible. This will help us give you the best care possible.

Transportation and Support

If you’re having sedation or anesthesia, it’s important to designate a trusted adult to drive you home. Plan to be with someone so they can monitor you for at least 24 hours after surgery. This helps ensure your safety and comfort during recovery.

Special Instructions

Some procedures may require extra steps before surgery, such as taking an antibacterial rinse or applying a topical medication. We’ll let you know if this applies to you and provide everything you need.

Consent Forms and Paperwork

Please make sure your consent forms and any other pre-op paperwork are filled out before you arrive. Bring a photo ID and your insurance card.

If you have last-minute questions or start to feel unwell before your procedure, give us a call right away. We’ll help you decide if it’s safe to continue as planned.

Day of Surgery Checklist

Here’s a quick list to review the morning of your appointment:

  • You have followed all fasting rules
  • You’re wearing comfy, loose clothing
  • Your forms and ID are packed and ready
  • You’ve arranged for a ride home and aftercare

Once all these items are checked off—we’ll take it from there.

Final Reminders

These instructions are designed to keep you safe and give you the best possible experience. We know this may be new for you, but it’s familiar to us—and we’ll walk with you through every step.

If anything feels unclear or you just need reassurance, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to help you feel ready, relaxed, and supported.
