Post-Op Care Instructions

We’re so glad you chose Advanced Oral Surgery & Periodontics for your care. Now that your procedure is complete, our focus will shift into helping you heal smoothly and comfortably at home. You’ve taken an important step for your health, and we’re here to support you through every part of the recovery.

This guide walks you through what to expect and how to take care of yourself in the hours and days ahead. If anything feels unclear—or you just want to check in—don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re only a phone call away.

Immediate Post-Surgery Care

After your procedure, it’s important to delegate someone you trust to drive you back home. You should rest for the rest of the day and avoid being alone. Try to relax, keep your head elevated, and don’t plan on doing anything active.

We recommend taking it easy the next few days. Avoid heavy lifting, bending over, or intense exercise so your body can focus on healing.

Managing Discomfort and Pain

Some discomfort is expected after surgery, but it should be manageable with the right care. If you were given a prescription pain reliever, take it exactly as directed.

If you were not prescribed medication, over-the-counter pain relief such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen should help.

Use an ice pack on the outside of your face to help with swelling. Try 20 minutes on, then 20 minutes off. Try to keep this up for the first 24 to 48 hours.

Bleeding Control

Mild bleeding is normal during the first day. You can manage it by gently biting on a clean gauze pad. Change the gauze as needed, about every 30 to 60 minutes.

To minimize bleeding:

  • Keep your head propped up, even when resting
  • Don’t spit, use a straw, or smoke

These actions can loosen the clot and slow healing.

Eating and Drinking

Stick to soft foods and cool liquids for the first couple of days. Good options include yogurt, smoothies, applesauce, soup, or mashed potatoes.

Avoid anything that’s hot, spicy, crunchy, or hard to chew. Steer clear of alcohol and limit caffeine until we give you the green light.

Oral Hygiene

You can gently brush your teeth the day after surgery, but avoid the area where surgery was done. Be careful not to disturb the healing site.

We may recommend a special mouth rinse, or you can use warm saltwater rinses to keep things clean. Avoid using regular mouthwash unless we tell you otherwise.

Activity Restrictions

Give your body time to recover. Don’t rush back into exercise or strenuous activities. Take a few days off from anything that raises your heart rate or puts pressure on your body.

You can return to normal routines slowly as you start feeling better.

Medications

Take all medications exactly as instructed. This may include:

  • Antibiotics to prevent infection
  • Pain relievers for comfort
  • Anti-inflammatory medication to reduce swelling

Finish your full course of antibiotics if prescribed, even if you start feeling better.

Follow-Up Care

We may schedule a follow-up visit to check how you’re healing. If you don’t have one set, feel free to call us and we’ll help schedule it.

Contact us right away if you notice:

  • Bleeding that won’t stop
  • Severe pain that doesn’t improve with medication
  • Fever, swelling, or pus

We’re here for you, even after your visit is over.

Following these steps will give you the best chance at a quick and healthy recovery. If anything feels off or you’re not sure what to do, call our office—we’re always happy to help.
