Dr. Shayla Steeds was raised in Willmar, Minnesota and graduated from Bemidji State University Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance in 2008. Dr. Steeds then took a more non-traditional route to dental school, first working as a phlebotomist at North Country Regional Hospital in Bemidji, MN and later at Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis where she developed her interest in healthcare. She then took on a role as a Cardiovascular Monitoring Technician based at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis before earning her D.D.S. degree from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry.
Dr. Steeds completed her residency in Periodontics at Mayo Clinic where she was Chief Resident and also earned a Master’s Degree for her research on the Risk of Dental Implant Failure in Obesity. She has received multiple awards including the Charles H. Mayo Integration Award and the Phillip J. Sheridan Mayo Values Award, and while a resident, also achieved Silver Level Quality Essentials Certification. Dr. Steeds is a board-certified member of the American Board of Periodontology. She has presented research at the Midwest Society of Periodontics, given lectures at Mayo Clinic Grand Rounds and the University of Michigan Dental School, and acted as Supervising Dentist for dental hygiene students at the Rochester Community Technical College.
Dr. Steeds chose the Periodontics specialty because of its strong foundation in evidence-based practice and emphasis on oral and systemic health. She works closely with patients to provide the knowledge to make treatment decisions that fit their needs. Dr. Steeds strives to provide the highest quality of care while creating an open and caring environment.
During her spare time, Dr. Steeds enjoys cultivating orchids, cooking, reading, motorcycling, and playing squash. Most of all, she adores spending time with her family – her husband Graham, and two little daughters Emma and Nora.
